What’s the difference between packshots and covers?

They are quite visually distinct, and knowing the difference can help you make your leaflet much more appealing and troubleshoot mistakes.

The product image of an offer can be displayed in two different ways: Packshot or cover.

📖 This guide explains:

Packshot offers

In a packshot offer, the product image is a product without background displayed within a dedicated image area of the template:

Examples include:

  • Products on a transparent or white background

  • Isolated product packshots

Note that for packshots, Horizon will automatically perform image optimizations, such as removing the background.

Cover offers

In a cover offer, the product image expands to fill the entire offer template and acts as the background for the offer:

Examples include:

  • Products shown in use

  • Interior or outdoor scenes

  • Campaign imagery with environmental context

Misidentification of images

Horizon automatically tries to detect whether an image is a packshot or a cover based on the characteristics of the image.

In a few cases though, Horizon may misidentify the image.

  • If a packshot image is detected as a cover, it'll take up all the space of the offer, which can lead to some products looking too big and out of place.

  • On the contrary, if a cover image is detected as a packshot, Horizon will do image optimisations and that can lead smaller product images, non-ideal cropping and backgrounds only partially removed.

Thankfully, there is an easy way to fix this.

How to manually change from one to the other

In case Horizon has misidentified a packshot as a cover, or a cover as a packshot, the easiest way is to manually change it.

Here, a cover has been misidentified as a packshot:

In that case, you can manually select to display as a cover.

  1. Right click on the offer

  2. Select “Offer image”

  3. Select “Convert to cover”

And then it’s fixed:

In the case of a packshot misidentified as a cover, the process is the same, except the final step is "Convert to packshot".
