Tokens: What are they, and how to use them?

Tokens control colors and fonts for every element in your leaflet.

Updated this week

Tokens are the foundation of consistent design in Horizon.

This article explains what tokens are, what they control in Horizon, and where and how to best apply changes to token values.

📖 In this guide, we’ll go through:

What are tokens?

Tokens are named, reusable values for single design settings.

These settings includes:

  • Colors

    • Backgrounds

    • Call-to-action buttons (CTAs)

    • Text

    • Splashes

    • Sales asides

  • Typography

    • Font type

    • Font weight (for example light, regular, and bold)

Having tokens for these settings makes the elements look consistent across all your leaflets.

For example, rather than manually setting all button colors to #FF5733, all buttons are automatically applied with a token such as Primary CTA color, with #FF5733 already set.

In short, tokens help ensure consistency and make it easy to create on-brand leaflets.

How are tokens created?

Tokens, and their default values for your company, are set up by iPaper based on your brand guidelines and preferences.

This means that when your Horizon account is delivered, your default token values already reflect your brand identity.

You can’t create new default tokens or modify them yourself.

Instead, you can override the default token values in specific contexts. Those overrides can be applied on a single offer manually, or set up as a Theme that can be reused across leaflets.

Where and how can token values be overridden?

While the default token values can’t be changed by you, their values can be overridden at different places in Horizon, depending on if you want…

  • to re-use the changed token value across sections and different leaflets.

  • to change token values for a single offer

Themes

Override token values multiple offers in a section and reuse across leaflets

You can override token values in a Theme, and thereby the changes can be applied across leaflets and sections by applying the theme.

Overriding tokens on a Theme-level is a good idea if you’re planning on using the overriden token value multiple times.

You can both 1) change values for tokens already applied on the Theme, and 2) add more tokens to the specific Theme.

Leaflet editor

Override token values for single offers in one leaflet, not reusable

You can also override the token values for single offers.

Overriding token values on an offer-level can be a good idea if you want to add some visual ‘flair’ to the leaflet by changing colors or fonts of elements of a single offer, and thereby creating some visual variance to catch the eye.

Overriding token values on the offer-level are not reusable, and must be applied manually to each offer individually.

  1. Click the offer you want to override token values for

  2. Click the “Area” modal

Then, you can both 1) change values for tokens already applied on the offer, and 2) add more tokens to the specific offer.

That’s it!

We know that, unless you have a design background, the concept of tokens can be challenging. If you have any questions or need help, you can always reach out to us at support@ipaper.io or via the chat in the Horizon admin.
